Three alternatives- environmental adaptation, the meeting of immediate needs, and reform- as purposes of education are discussed- and refuted- first, before Mr. Hutchins calls for a thorough and early study of mankind by way of the broad ideational backgrounds that made the present and must be used to make the future.
