SCREAMER: Last of the Eastern Panthers

Email this review

In the late nineteenth century, panthers (also called catamounts, cougars, etc.) still inhabited the mountain wilderness of Pennsylvania until they were eventually iped out by man. Mr. McClung describes in effective detail the possible nature of the survival of one of the few remaining in 1885. While the author succeeds in sharply portraying the cats and their calculated quick movements, the artist has failed to capture the muscular strength of the creatures; his panthers are evenly shaded and smooth; the grey tones usually cover the background, resulting in an overall heavy effect.
