THE ROARING DAYS

The rough and tumble of the turn of the century of Australia's outback is revived here- in a continuity of stories with a fictional device as a father tells them to his son who has returned to Australia in 1954 to live again in the country where they occurred. The stories themselves are straightforward- of phoney preachers, opium smoking Chinese, mining camp cruel jokers, gold robberies, etc., etc. and they serve as a counter-part to our earlier and wilder West. Many of the characters are just as colorful, Paddy, Rembrand the Painter, Jack-Without-A-Shirt, the Roarer- and they appear with what seems to be little exaggeration and provide good reading.
