Kaltenborn all bringing, to mind the special qualities that made Smith a respected and popular figure. Moses's piece on Smith (which appeared in The New York Times Magazine Inst fall in a different version) takes in his background, political career, personal independence and traits, and shows how, through his years of public office, the man did not veer from his beliefs, interests and concerns.
