On the dreadful day the Bonaventure sailed away from Foxe Basin with his good friend, Armand, young Whitey, the warmhearted polar bear, realized that it was indeed a cold and frosty world. For months Whitey had had a soft berth, earning his keep by doing simple dances in exchange for food from the ship. Chilled and crushed by the treatment he received from a she-bear and Eskimo hunters, after the vessel departed, Whitey wearily climbed aboard an iceberg headed south, with another passenger, the Eskimo woman, Kikortaloriak, who graciously shared some walrus with him. By the time the iceberg hit Miami Beach, his companion had been rescued by a helicopter, but happily he was reunited with Armand, whom he found playing the accordion in a night club.
