The boyhood years of the founder of the Boy Scouts in America come front and center in a series of , pranks and practical jokes. Throughout his boyhood in Cincinnati as the Civil War approached and was fought, Dan Beard proved an irrepressible prankster, hoaxing his neighbors with tracks to indicate a giant had been walking in the mud near a local mill, spoofing the immigrant German woman as she tried to learn English so that her vocabulary was entirely confused. Often his adventures drew others to follow him. Perhaps it was memories of the freedom of his boyhood which prompted his participation in the Boy Scouts movement. Certainly Boy Scouts will enjoy this portrait and many other youngsters eager to know of boyhood in this country long ago.
