There is no more steadfast and loyal group of followers than those of the Nathan cult, so this simple, quiet diary of the Nathan family summer on the Cape will have its market readymade, even though it isn't another Nathan novel. From May to September -- the round of homely activities, boating, fishing (and catching nothing), digging clams, lobster suppers, beach parties, picnics, punctuated by airplane spotting, first aid classes. U. S. O. entertainment, talk of war and desultory topics, criticising freely and broadly, and tacitly recognizing the fact that it may be the last summer for such casual freedom of life, even for writers.
