THE GREEN LEAF

Some charming verses which are neither intellectual mysteries, psychological testaments nor philosophical puzzles, but merely the finely tuned reactions of a person aware of the beauties of nature, of the consolations and illusions of love. And they are also expressive of a tender patriotism and a finely aristocratic pride in Judaism. The most successful poems are the sonnets, some of which rise to extraordinary heights of technical and expressive beauty. The others, lyrical and sensuous, seems less fully realized but are pleasing in tone. This is seldom great poetry but it does not pretend to be. And the lack of pretentiousness, the simply understood emotions should rank it fairly high as well as make it popular.
