A student of world religions here presents background for an understanding of Japan's Shintoism. Ballou traces the Japanese doctrine of racial superiority and world conquest through the country's history, history often no more than myth, superstition, bigotry. The divine creation of Japan; the emperor's descent and God-like prerogatives; the divine mission of the Japanese people; the Chinese; Buddhist, Christian influences on Shintoism. Ballou concludes with a proposal to use the Shinto religion to further our own democratic purposes. A monumental piece of research, fully documented, valuable as reference, but superficial as opinion.
