PETE PACK RAT by Robert Quackenbush

Email this review

Pete Pack Rat, the repentant villain of Detective Mole (p. 69, J- 21), is handed the badge of retiring Sheriff Gopher here, when he takes it upon himself to stand up to Gizzard Coyote, who has captured the Jack Rabbit twins Summers and Winters and generally terrorized the town of Pebble Junction. Pete keeps the job only long enough to rout the outlaw--by blinding him with a tin plate set to catch the noontime sun, then luring him into a heap of cactus. After that Pete's sweetheart Sally Gopher takes over her father's job (""Pebble Junction's first lady sheriff""), as she wants a career and Pete would rather work in the garden and hunt for shiny treasures like the handy tin plate. You could call it Low Noon--though Pete does represent a decided advance over his bumbling predecessor Detective Mole.
