Undoubtedly the most important moral question of our day is the clash of ideologies, the controversies over the individual's right to free thought and expression, and the right of the state to protect itself against these so called subversives. Socrates, who was one of the supremely controversial figures of all time, provides an obvious parallel and is a good hook on which to hang a propagandist tale, and this is the story of his trial- and eventual escape into death. But for all its pertinence, it is a dull and wordy para-phrase of this period and of doubtful interest to the general market which looks for more popular virtues in historical fiction.
