It is cheaper on several scores to build boats from kits, provided you have the ability with tools, the space facilities for assemblage, the necessary time. Important too is knowledge of types of boats and what type you need for the waters to be navigated. Robert Scharff, whose books are standbyes in the boating fraternity, has done a first rate book on a subject of increasing importance now that boating is everyman's sport. He discusses basic techniques, the step by step procedure as related to boats ranging from prams and skiffs to sailboats and fiberglass boats. Final chapters discuss finishing. There is data on tools and equipment, on various factors to determine when ordering kits- what is already prefabricated, what already assembled, what is left to do. He makes no bones of some of the difficulties and urges advance knowledge of what you want and what you are capable of doing before launching out on the project. Here's a book to reduce the margin of error.
