These preserved letters give an intimate view of a spiritual master in action as well as an insight into his personal development as he rose from being a secular priest to abbot of his order. The letters reproduce for posterity what Joseph Marmion wrote to a bishop friend, to his sister, Rosie, to an abbot, to a priest-friend, to an English superioress, to an English abbess and to a Benedictine nun. As a historical document the book has considerable merit, since the letters are a reflection on an age and period. Students of the spiritual life will especially find it valuable. But whether there will be many who will want to bother with the book enough to get into the letters is quite another matter. Certainly the Benedictines will be interested. This is Number Four in the series entitled ""Benedictine Studies"". All who do trouble to read these letters will find many worth while reading, and as a bonus derive lessons from them for personal living.
