The accomplished anthologist reminds us that he's also one of the most accomplished sf short story writers in the business. Eight glimpses into an uncommonly present future, touching on issues from political hopelessness to the longing for mythic rebirth to sf itself as lurid narcotic. Silverberg's favorite vein is a sort of tigerish cool marked by lots of cute narrative ellipsis and cinematic ""cutting."" We prefer his occasional concessions to tamer expectations--a genial tale of an extraterrestrial dybbuk exorcism, a lyrical one about a blind girl telepathically maintaining a ship's communication with Earth, a masterful variant on the psycholandscape gimmick which pits a foolhardy therapist against the maelstroms and caverns of a schizoid's mind.
