Medical author/editor Brace and pediatrician Pacanowski primarily have an eye out for when the physician should be called: the more serious the problem, the less information is given. Thus, ""addiction,"" ""bulimia,"" and other serious disorders receive only short discussion, while a brief look at ""autism"" ends tersely: "". . . no specific treatment exists, although tranquilizers are sometimes prescribed to relieve symptoms such as screaming attacks and extreme hyperactivity. In severe forms of autism it may be necessary to institutionalize the child."" Throughout their march from ""abdominal bloating"" to ""worms,"" the authors concentrate on when to call for help. Parents will do better with a wider-ranging guide that discusses children as people rather than symptoms, at the same time offering help with problems. Penelope Leach's Child Care Encyclopedia (p. 294) is the standout.
