A definitive life of Lee, covering all phases of the man and the soldier. Starting with a brief survey of his family and inherited traditions, the biographer goes into his boyhood and education, his marriage and family life; he takes in his experiences in the Mexican War, the quelling of revolts on the border, the gradual formation of his stand on the problem of the North and South. The bulk of the book is a close analysis of the eastern campaigns of the Civil War, enough of Lee the man to give color and emotional quality. Then -- following the war, his retirement into the peace of life as administrator and educator at Washington University in Lexington. A more than adequate biography -- but not an inspired one.
