The designers and builders of wagons and carriages were, in their own time, is taken for granted as those working today in the automobile industry. Behind their anonymity lie some colorful stories which the author tells with skill. His short history also includes the drovers and trail bosses who used the various wagons as essential equipment in the opening of the West. Photographs of extant models are used throughout the book as well as drawings. From the origin of the Conestogas to the influence of the fringed surreys on early automotive body designs, the author has organized and presented material that will supplement units in transportation as well as those on famous trails and Western Americana. There is a chronology of wagon forms, a glossary of the wagonmen's terms, and an index.
