A French novel of suspense about a man, Fernand, and his mistress, Lucienne, who plot to kill his wife, Mireille, for her insurance so that Lucienne can buy herself a practice (she is a doctor) at Antibes. All goes according to a complicated plan until at the critical moment the body disappears and Fernand, in his desperation, begins to suspect that his murdered wife leads some kind of ghostly existence. He gets letters from her. Her brother has seen her since the day of her death. She even cooks a favorite meal for him while he is out of the house. All of this finally drives him to suicide, and in its aftermath we learn that this has been deliberately planned by Mireille and Lucienne who will share the insurance between them... This nasty business is rather neat- over and above the negligible interest of those engaged in it.
