An unassuming, if by now familiar, story of the boyhood-to- manhood years of Eben Osborne, the years of growth which are largely groping, the recurrent issues of conformity and change. This too is a portrait of the sobriety, the severity, of a small New England community, of loneliness as Eben, orphaned, was sent to live with two old women in the old house which had once seen better days when Eben's grandfather had owned the local lumber mill. Here is the slowly changing pattern of his days, of his schooling, his first adolescent adventure with Alice, his hope of one day reclaiming his grandfather's mill from Alice's father, his idleness, his inertia, and finally the love affair with Rusty which impels him into the outside world. Adequate.
