A CAVALCADE OF MAGICIANS

Retelling the traditional selections in his own words, Green has assembled here an impressively varied assortment of ancient (Egyptian, Greek and Babylonian) legends, medieval tales (from Golland's Aladdin to a life of Merlin based on early sources), lively folktales (many from Lang's colored Fairy Books), and original stories by E. Nesbit, Kipling, Milne, etc. Green's dialogue and detail always fit smoothly and add vitality, his judicious cutting of ancient, unfamiliar material makes for greater interest and accessibility, and the whole well-paced collection from humor to heroics is splendidly set off by Ambrus' dashing black-and-white illustrations.
