WONDERS OF LLAMAS

The lives of the people of the Andes have always been linked with those of the llamas, and so Perry has a more than usually varied fund of material for this latest in the Wonders. . . series. Besides describing the features, social behavior, etc., of the four varieties of lamoids--the wild guanaco and vicuna, the domesticated alpaca and llama--he describes their practical and ceremonial functions in the high Inca culture to which they were indispensable, their central place in the lives of today's highland Indians, and their importance to the economy of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Gladys Conklin brought a bit more style to her 1975 introduction, but this will serve a somewhat older reader-at least until someone comes along with the more lavish treatment the llama's splendid history calls for.
