BOATS OVERLAND

The author of a number of delightful books for adults about small boats on inland waterways- who not too long ago wrote a book on How Boats Go Uphill for children (1959- p. 177 J-85) now traces the history of the various methods by which distances were eliminated and boats taken overland. From the days when the Greeks trundled little boats on trolleys across the isthmus now cut by the Corinth Canal; to the use of rollers by the Vikings, to the Languaedoc Canal designed to take ships from sea to sea, to the great waterways- Suez, the Kiel Canal, and Panama. And now the St. Lawrence Seaway takes ships far inland, past rapids, over land to ports and harbors. David Knight's exquisite line drawings, with color block, adds a very special note.
