Debut author Wiyepe offers a personal endorsement of modern Christian belief and humble devotion to Christ.

Though the Bible may seem overwhelming with its various authors and parables, Wiyepe says it can be deciphered with careful dedication and study. As he shows, it can serve as a guiding light to those who are willing to approach it humbly. Here, using famous quotes from both the Old and New Testament, he meditates on the failing flesh of man, the temptations of the devil and the ultimate guidance of Christ. For finding the sometimes hidden gems in biblical teaching, Wiyepe, a geologist, incorporates the metaphor of mining for small deposits of gold over a vast expanse of land. It’s a simple message fervently endorsed. “There is limitless power in the name of Jesus,” he says. “There is no other access to God except through Jesus.” Believers will certainly appreciate his passion, though it may not sway others. Skeptics with preconceived notions of topics like evolution, for instance, are unlikely to be persuaded by such statements as: “I say hypothetical science is stupid in a sense where conclusions are purely based on mere assumptions with no evidence….Evolution is purely hypothetical since there is no evidence and proof to support this assumption.” Nevertheless, Wiyepe stays positive. In this personal guidebook, the basic instructions on faith, love and humility will appeal to readers looking for spiritual direction and a deeper understanding of the Bible and its meaning for everyday life. While the general, heartfelt message of love and forgiveness will have many nodding in approval, nonevangelical readers won’t think this is the best route.

Earnest if not always persuasive.
