TIDES OF MONT ST. MICHEL

We reported this in our foreign supplement of September 1, 1937, and this will supplement that report... Against the background of the cathedral town of Mont St. Michel is laid the conflict of a young married couple. Penniless after the depression, Andre Brelet takes a job as guide, while his wife, a self-centered tart, exposes herself for the first time since their marriage when she is held prisoner by tide and quicksands. AndrÉ comes to realize that his marriage is a shoddy thing, and becomes impregnated with the beauty of the place. Two exciting scenes -- straight melodrama -- but for the most part this is a quieter book than its predecessors, and perhaps less effective. The background is the story; the characters seem pasteboard figures, the story unoriginal.
