KIRKUS REVIEW

Subtitled The Careers and Personalities of Some Outstanding Musical Performers of Our Times, this book embraces the performing world with a fine selection of conductors, vocalists, and instrumentalists. The author gives an essentially professional biography of these musicians, and his choices seem in part made to reveal a range of contributions to the art, as he considers and evaluates each individual's background, and the special quality of his gift to the musical world. His conductors include Ansermet, Beecham, Mitropoulos, Munch, Ormandy, Toscanini, and Walter; his singers are Bernac, Flagstad, and Lehmann, who exemplify well his intentional range. Among his instrumentalists, the pianists number largely-Casadesus, Gieseking, Hess, Horowitz, Rubinstein; Szigeti stands as the lone violinist; Casals and the Budapest String Quartet and Segovia support the string roster. Kell and Landowska round out the list. The group is imposing, and any comments on selection will be those of omission. A fine book for any library.
