Professor Bainton of Yale begins with this volume a series of his hitherto unpublished papers on Church history. His purpose, as explained in the preface, is to ""garner the fruits of the years into a single basket that they may be the more readily accessible"". The stature of Bainton as a church historian is such that the publication of these papers is an event of importance. Few scholars possess his ability to deal with complex historical questions with such clarity that they may be read and understood even by those who lack technical knowledge in the field of church history. He is never one not to see the forest for the trees. The subject dealt with here are grouped under three heads: (1) Patristic and Medieval Christianity; (2) Continuities and Changes from Medieval to Renaissance Christianity; and (3) Religion and the Church in the Renaissance. Some of the papers will be of special interest to the laity; for example:- St. Augustine's Method of Religious Teaching; The Ministry in the Middle Ages; Christian Views of Human Destiny, and Changing Ideas and Ideals in the Sixteenth Century. Church historians will welcome all of these papers since they come from the brilliant mind of one of their most distinguished colleagues.
