From Jean Fouquet to Braque, this is a summary history of French painting. By isolating a single country, one is able to survey the period of five-hundred years, with a sense of growth and development which might be lacking in a text concerned with painters from all of Europe. Dealing primarily with the painters' attitudes toward their crafts, this text covers nearly two-dozen of France's most prominent artists. Somewhat specialized for the age group at which it is aimed, but precise and informative.
