THE LEATHERNECKS, Our Marines in Fact and Picture

A very factual account of this glamorous branch of our armed forces. From the small beginnings of the corps in the American Revolution, it details their activities through many wars: the amazing capture of Derne in Tripoli (1805), the battle of New Orleans, the journey with Perry on his peaceful mission to Japan (1853), the heroic capture of Belleau Wood in World War I and the exploits of the present war from Iceland to the tropical South Seas. The last third of the book details the various divisions of the service and basic training and organization. The matter-of-fact account of all this becomes somehow compelling in interest through sheer cumulative effect. I hope the photographic illustrations will enliven the heavy text.
