A novel which attempts to show the relation of a group of people to each other through the years, by subdividing the story into episodes spaced in time. But the connecting thread is the love story of Mark and Moira, who met when Mark was an eager, zestful boy, married when his first success has proved volatile, and slip apart when her success as a fashionable dressmaker overtops his ineffectuality as a proletarian dramatist. Finally he turns to witty light drama, is successful, they are reunited. The author has a knack for witty, intricate dialogue, occasionally erring on the side of preciosity, with a suggestion of the whimsical. The book is readable, though overlong and somewhat too English for those who don't like it.
