PICTURE BOOK OF POEMS by Romney Gay

PICTURE BOOK OF POEMS

By

Publisher: Grosset & Dunlap

Romney Gay has a simplicity of technique that rescues his work from the charge of commonplaceness. His line drawings have a spontaneity that his color work lacks, and this book is checkful of line drawings, with gay sketches of children in action, illustrating the little poems. One's first impression is that the collection represents unimportant work of well known poets (chiefly contemporary), but as one studies the general quality and type of poem, one realizes that here is the sort of collection needed to bridge the gap between nursery rhymes and children's classics. The subject matter touches familiar things in small children's lives. Good value -- squarish book -- board covers -- clear color reproduction -- good line work.
