KIRKUS REVIEW

These short stories are a happy blend of science fiction with detection and intrigue, told with Goulart's inimitable dry humor. Here are various exploits of Jose Silvera, the free-lance writer whose fetish about getting paid complicates his life no matter what planet he's on. In addition to the Silvera stories, there's an attempted theft by teleportation or a religious relic known as the Verdadero Brickbat; a time traveler who foils the Fiend of Nob Hill in a fine parody of the hard-boiled detective school; an urban guerrilla who became the enemy's secret weapon; and a husband and wife team who rescue the president of the U.S. from the clutches of the Svengali Institute.
