IS ANYONE HOME?

A flap book about a little boy visiting his grandparents' farm. First published in England in 1985, this book has a British feeling. Each page shows the young visitor and his puppy at a different part of the farm--henhouse, greenhouse, grandfather's shop, stable, doghouse, kitchen--and the flap opens to show what is inside: chickens, cats, grandfather sipping from a mug, the horses, Ben the dog, grandmother. The text is minimal (""I know who's behind this door."" Open flap to show cats. ""Hello, cats""). The characters are realistic, the animals appealing, as are the details: inquisitive chickens, lush greens and flowers everywhere, a cornucopia of animal and plant life--ants and butterflies, birds and snails, mice and frogs peeping from behind piles of flowerpots. A perfect book for the very young who love to guess what's coming next.
