KIRKUS REVIEW

What's in the bag?"" asks Marty, and so Jack reveals that he has borrowed a tape recorder from the library so he can listen to the tapes Aunt Julia sent from Africa. (End of Aunt Julia and Africa.) Enter Patrick, at whose bidding Jack runs off to retrieve a ball. When Jack returns, a bus has run over and flattened his bag. Implausibly, Miss Hope of the library is phoning that night to see if the tape recorder works. Jack is sick with worry about what to tell her. (Roy tries to make Jack's practice excuses funny but just hasn't the knack for turning easy reading dialogue into snappy repartee.) More implausibly, Jack never looks into the bag to check out the tape recorder. Most implausibly, Miss Hope finally calls, all apologies: it seems she forgot to put the tape recorder into the bag. From static setup to deflated end, a dumb idea ineptly developed. (And why does Hoban put the little boys in grownups' sport coats--especially over T-shirts?)
