KIRKUS REVIEW

The author of Dragonmede, here in the Highlands a-hunting matters gang awry anent Elizabeth's handsome husband, Calum, the Laird of Faillie. Among the happenings: the murder of her father, owner of a cloth mill which had been spinning out once-forbidden tartans reproduced from long-lost documents supposedly procured by Calum; and the disappearance of portraits cherished by the Mackintoshes, the family of Calum's dead wife and her brother Duncan, who has returned to view his erstwhile home from a distance. There's an oddly arrogant housekeeper, a surly gardener, and something disagreeable in the moat. Old gothic hands will spot the guilty kilt from the start, but the denouement's bright, even if Elizabeth isn't.
