THE BLACK CAMELS

By

Pub Date: Oct. 22nd, 1969

Oil once again (The Wrecking of Offshore Five--1968) and also on that familiar vector of East and West, old versus new as Sheik Rasul is overthrown and exiled to make way for his Oxford educated nephew Kassim who will look more kindly on foreign capitalistic interests. In revenge, Rasul sets fire to a big well, Qashran One, and is Seen there with his black camels imprecating scourges on the black gold. A British, once pro-Arab, career diplomat is determined to bring him in but none of this is developed beyond the convention of the formula action story and the continuity here of pouring oil on troubled waters and water on oil.
