This is Sinclair Lewis- through his own writings- as personal and individual a lot of pieces as could be expected from one who never considered writing an autobiography. Forty years are here spanned, from the themes and early writings in Yale through a career that concentrated on novels but spread out into critical commentary, social commentary, astringent commentary- and, in sharp contrast, warm personal tributes to such people as Wells, Phelps, Carl Van Doren. Some of the autobiographical pieces are zestful reading, and characteristic of the man in his varied facets:- Two Yale Men in Utopia, Breaking into Print, I'm an Old Newspaper Man. They show him able to view himself with detachment and humor. For an example of Lewis as a storm center, read Fools Liars and Mr. De Yale. It's enormously good reading, and more important in scope than From Main Street in Stockholm
