Can it be -- it is -- ten years since Rosalyn Drexler's debut with I Am the Beautiful Stranger but then every writer must have her day and how else is one to be philosophical about a deliciously daring little cont e re the attachment between a young woman and her dog -- Pablo. Under all that gel, this Cosmopolitan Girl is Helen Jones and she comes by her irregularities quite honestly -- her father's a genius healer and her mother's a psychic -- and she's, well, just one of those ultraurban sophisticates with nothing to do except take care of Pablo who eats chopped steak au jus -- God forbid Alpo. Mrs. Drexler has worked this novel of sorts up via 145 assorted entries -- letters, confidences, poetry (or rather doggerel) -- and she's gotten a dazzling envoi on the jacket from Norman Mailer and Gloria Steinem and Donald Barthelme. You'll also see Pablo draped around her like a furpiece. . . . Even if you keep reminding yourself that this is camp, it's fingerlickingly awful.
