THE TAILOR'S TRICK

Another neatly turned tale (see Baker's Man No Ducks for Dinner etc.) is this time set in young America- right in Providence Plantations. Jenckes, the tailor in Roger Williams' colony, is at a marriageable age. So is Betsy, the minister's daughter, who is employed as one of Jenckes' three sewing women. How Betsy and Jenckes defy some customs and get happily together makes a tidy trick and some humorous commentary on colonial life.
