KIRKUS REVIEW

Small town troubles, and scandal, when Shelby and Michael slope and he brings her home to an autocratic, antagonistic grandfather. Before long Shelby realizes that Michael is weak, submissive, jealous -- specifically of Bill, a young doctor, who like Shelby refuses to kowtow to local opinion. Real notoriety comes when Michael's brother gets a local girl in trouble, and marries another girl, leaving the first one to die of an abortion. Bill gets the blame, but Shelby stands by him, and wins her freedom in return for not exposing Michael's brother. Rentals is what it's for, though there are elements for raised eyebrows!
