These original poems have some excellent features and some glaring weaknesses, but as a whole they represent a serious attempt to give children poetry which is truly good, while being aimed specifically at their concerns. Oddly enough it is the descriptive verses which are the best. Romantic names and delicate, natural images have been quite skillfully used. Less successful are the action poems, which are frequently clumsy rhythmically. The attempt to adopt the tone of children of different age groups lends a note of preciosity. It is also unfortunate that many of the poems which start out strongly end with a half-conceived image.
