Alvin, Simon and Theodore have been entertaining television viewers for three generations, with more fans garnered from three recent movies starring the singing chipmunk group. This book with song and sound effects is based on the 1981 TV movie, A Chipmunk Christmas.
Alvin and his brothers are preparing for Christmas when Alvin gives his special Golden Echo Harmonica away to a boy named Tommy because the boy has been sick in bed for some time. The missing harmonica causes problems when the chipmunks are invited to play in a concert at Carnegie Hall on Christmas Eve, but Mrs. Claus mysteriously comes to Alvin’s rescue with the gift of a new harmonica. Eight buttons on the side of the book can be pressed to hear a short phrase of dialogue or a line from a Christmas carol or “The Chipmunk Song,” with coordinating icons placed within the text as prompts for the sound effects. The story is predictable and sentimental, with blandly commercial illustrations in the style of the 1980s movie.
Those chipmunks can be annoying to adults, especially with the squeaky songs, but lots of kids adore Alvin and his brothers. Just make sure you’re not in the room while they are doing it. (Picture book. 3-6)
