INSECTS IN ARMOR: A Beetle Book by Ross E. Hutchins

INSECTS IN ARMOR: A Beetle Book

Pub Date: March 15th, 1972
Publisher: Parents' Magazine Press

After a brief general introduction on life cycles, structure, and habits, Hutchins surveys 30 of the 275,000 kinds of beetles -- among them the destructive Japanese beetle, the favored ladybird, the common firefly, and the horned ""betsy-beetle"" which (according to Hutchins' experimentation) can pull 90 times and lift 850 times its own weight. Lavine's Wonders of the Beetle World (1962) is a more readable and thorough report on beetles in general; in comparison this is strictly a catalog, but useful as such and immeasurably enhanced by the photographs.
