TEE LAST TRUMPETERS

The last trumpeter swans now stay all year round in the Red Rock Migratory Waterfowl Refuge in the Rocky Mountains. Why they were forced to give up their instinctive migration, and how they used to live before Columbus brought the hunting white man is described in leisurely fashion with an undertone of throbbing sentimentality--""Perhaps, too, from that faraway lake, near the Arctic Ocean, their trumpet-like voices may once more thunder across the northland forest on moonlit nights in summer."" An afterword retells and expands upon the preceding information in adult language. The illustrations are neither effective (some Jagged masses supposed to represent shadows on the Water) nor pleasing (sickly dime-store coloring.) Mr. Hutchins and Mr. Connolly also collaborated on Travels of Monarch and Lives of an Oak Tree.
