Random collection of bits and pieces which might do for special reference but which reads jerkily and with uneven interest as a straight piece for reportage. Much of the information is quoted from contemporary sources, in frontier days, which gives it primary source value for the true western addict. Such matters as bed mates in frontier lodging houses, starting a fire under difficulties, tobacco, dancing, courting and marriage, gun etiquette, practical jokes, animals- wild and tame, cattle and trail drivers, food, women, homemade entertainment, ingenuity- legend and fact, tall tales, fighting men, the law, the vernacular -- all this is presented in brief accounts and anecdote.
