A story in a ""frame"" -- and told with a fantasy quality like an old legend. A Chinese trader -- an adventurer of mixed blood, Yang Carewe planned a strange house-party, to which he invited his past enemies, men and women, to his newly acquired estate in the heart of a swamp in Kedah. With this a motive -- the story is told of his successive relations with the people who are brought together for the houseparty. Then follows the story of the houseparty and of how some met death, some love, some a new turn and twist of fate. And among them, Lo Foh, whom he had most truly loved, found her greatest love. There is a certain fascination in the telling. The Chinese background and the episodic character may somewhat curtail the market.
