Rowland Evans Robinson (1833-1900), a well-loved voice of 19th-century Vermont, is rescued here from obscurity by poet/playwright Budbill in this intriguing collection, an abridged version of the author's complete works in seven volumes published between 1934 and 1937. Filled with painstakingly transcribed local dialect, Robinson's stories have a charming folksy qualitythough it can be difficult to read page after page of prose such as: ``I'll be dum'd `f I wouldn't druther hev Jozeff Hill's ol' yaller dawg for comp'ny `n t' hev such a consarned mumpin' set as you be.'' Yarbs! as Aunt Jerusha would say. More valuable as documents of social history and linguistic rarities than as literature.
