KIRKUS REVIEW

Another branch of the Services heard from -- this time at Quantico where he, Vance, was sent for indoctrination in a ten weeks' course for Officer's Candidate Class...Memorable practices, punishments; the training offers and their emphatic ways; the life of the ""boots"", the hazards of getting the ""word"", the conditioning, and finally the smoothing out of the raw edges to the perfection demanded by the Corps. Food, alphabet troubles, rifle range, police duty, problems and how they work them out, the discovery of the spirit of the Marines -- all in a jaunty picture of learning fast, glorying in the job, and sensing the importance of the individual. Not unfunny at times -- and rollicking writing.
