Count von Luckner and the Seeadler were publicized by Lowell Thomas, but Nerger of Wolf has remained unsung until now. A modern Henry Morgan who dodged the sea power of Great Britain for a year and four months, during which time he cruised 6,400 miles and sank 135,000 tons of Allied shipping and brought Wolf back to Kiel under her own steam. Only half a dozen men in Germany knew why a converted freighter sailed from Kiel in November 1916, fitted with mines, five guns of heavy caliber, torpedoes and a sea plane. Wolf lives as the most successful raider of all time; sowing her deadly eggs in British territorial waters, she even bearded British might on the threshhold of Singapore. The story of her exploits, told by a radio operator of the captured Wairuna who lived with her many prisoners in one of her empty mine holds, is a fair-minded sailor's story with no frills, of a truly epic voyage. Highly recommended for boys from 7 to 77 who always had a sneaking notion that the pirate racket was tops.
