All coastal areas should welcome this exceptionally good survey of typical harbor activities. They are very much like cities on the edge of cities and, by describing a typical one, the author outlines the necessary work that goes into and on at every port. The superb planning, dredging and building are virtually continuous of each phase. Then there are the ships, tugs and piloting, the dock workers and the supervision and maintenance of sanitation controls. This is a juvenile English import that lives up to the national reputation for good technical writing.
