THE PEACE CORPS EXPERIENCE

This is a rather dull collection of essays by ex-Corpsmen, dull partly because their experiences are abstracted from considerations of foreign policy and domestic politics in the countries in question, partly because so few express either basic criticisms of the Corps' goals and structure, or animated enthusiasm for their hitch. They describe training sessions, various living conditions, and projects in four main areas: teaching, health, community development, and agriculture. The bland, anecdotal tenor does spare us the official litanies of ""eye-opening"" ""person-to-person"" work for ""peace through understanding""; but only a few contributions (e.g. David Schickele, Nigeria) are sufficiently reflective and perspicuous to make the most of the subjective emphasis.
